| In August 1976, Ted Owens was invited to London to end the drought
there. When he arrived, newspapers claimed that forecasters could
see no end in sight to the drought. However, suddenly it began to
rain. The London subway system was shut down due to power blackouts.
Shortly thereafter, the drought was pronounced officially over.
